We are the Atom Smashers Robotics Team from Esquimalt High School, Greater Victoria School District #61. Our team strives to learn, develop skills, and explore topics related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Our goals are to engineer, design, build, program and operate a successful FIRST robot that meets the challenge of the problem set out for us. Success is measured in each member of the team gaining the ability to problem solve individually and as a unit in addition to being able to explain their learning path through this adventure.
Last season, we have helped start a new FTC team, and are continuing to focus on diversity and inclusion goals. Our mentorship team and the team itself is comprised of approximately 50% female or LGBTQIA2S+ members, and we have increased our voluntary representative membership this year again compared to last year. We welcome everyone and do not restrict our membership. It is important to us especially as our student population at the high school has a high vulnerability rating, and we wish to support them as much as possible. No student is refused participation due to difficulty to contribute financially.
Our team started with the opportunity to compete in the 2018 FIRST Robotics Canadian Pacific Regional held at the Save On Memorial Centre in Victoria British Columbia. We won the Rookie All-Star Award in 2018 for our build, perseverance, and all-around FIRST ideals that we have demonstrated as a team. Through that success, we were given the opportunity to compete at the 2018 Houston World Championships. Our team has continued to compete at the regional competition in Victoria and has taken away a lot of knowledge and important experience from these events. We competed for the third time in 2020 and won silver at the regional championships. We then participated in the FTC and FRC in 2020 which gave us plenty of experience for our 2021 season. In our 2022 season, we were the winning alliance at regionals for FTC and won innovation in control in the Regionals for FRC. In the 2023 season, we won the 1st Place Inspire Award at FTC regionals, the 2nd Place Inspire Award, the Connect Award and was part of the winning alliance at the BC/Yukon Regional Championships, and competed in FRC. We can't wait to see what 2024/2025 has in store for us!
